Santa Cruz Civic Committee Charges Government of Illegal Detention

Posted: Nate on Mar 11 | Law & Justice, Politics

The Civic Committee of Santa Cruz today accused the national executive branch of detaining Eduardo Paz, president of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Santa Cruz, for political motives.  Mr. Paz was detained in Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz en route to an international business forum in Mexico.  Immigration officials prevented Mr. Paz from leaving the country after which he was held in custody by Special Forces Fighting Against Crime (Felcc) for at least 13 hours.  According to Nicolás Rivera, vice-president of the civic organization, “This is an abuse of power by the Bolivian government, thus the Civic Committee condemns these acts of the Executive [branch] as contrary to democracy, exclusively motivated by political interest, enthusiastically persecuting and imprisoning all who think differently.”  Mr. Rivera added that the committee would continue denouncing these “illegalities” before the international community until democracy prevails again.
