« Franchises Flourish in Bolivia, for Better and Worse | Home | 2 Police in Potosí Arrested for Raping 18 Year Old » Opposition Angered by “Transitory Law”Posted: admin on May 25 | Law & Justice, Politics The Bolivian opposition was angered by President Morales’ decision to promote the so called “Transitory Law” that will allow him to suspend governors that have judicial investigations launched against them. The opposition has been mounting protests against this law in recent weeks which they view as a subversion of democratically elected officials. The transitory laws establishes that any governors elected in the recent April 4th elections can be suspended if they are accused in legal actions. In the three states where opposition to Evo Morales is strongest: Santa Cruz, Beni, and Tarija. all three of the recently re-elected governors are being investigated by judges appointed by President Morales and could be suspended under this law. The opposition has denounced the transitory law as unconstitutional and is organizing strikes and road blocks to protest its passage yesterday after 18 hours of debate in the Bolivian House of Deputies. According to opposition representative Victor Hugo Zamora, President Morales had planned to announce the new law today but the opposition appealed the law and it remains in appeals for the next 48 hours. Evo Morales recently won the power to appoint judges to empty seats in all courts in Bolivia including the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Tribunal and opposition members argue that the judiciary branch is becoming politicized.
