New Polling Predicts MAS Winning Fewer Races Than Expected

Posted: Nate on Mar 31 | Politics

According to a second opinion poll conducted by Captura Consulting SRL, Evo Morales´ Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS) is strongly favored to win only three mayoral races and four governorships in next Sunday´s elections.  Of the ten principal cities of the country, MAS is expected to win mayoral elections in El Alto, Cochabamba, and Cobija and governorships in the departments of Cochabamba, La Paz, Potosí, and Oruro.  The poll suggests that pro-government candidates have the edge in the three projected mayoral wins for MAS but the mayoral race in La Paz is too close to predict.  The survey also put the Movimiento Sin Miedo (MSM) candidate in the race for major of Oruro ahead of the MAS candidate by six percentage points.

As expected, opposition candidates are projected to win over MAS candidates in the opposition strongholds of Santa Cruz and Beni. Undecided voters will play a critical role in deciding elections in many departments of the country.  According to the survey approximately 37% of respondents in Oruro had not decided on a candidate, did not respond, or were keeping their votes private.  Cochabamba and Potosí also had high numbers of undecided voters, a section of the electorate which will be very important in deciding the outcome of Sunday´s elections.

The poll surveyed 3,110 participants in the nine departments between March 19-27.
