« Military to Stop Sugar Exports | Home | Chilean Musician Demands Bolivia Sea Access at Awards Ceremony » New OAS Formed that Excludes the US & CanadaPosted: admin on Feb 23 | International In Cancún, Mexico today a new regional group similar to the Organization of American States was formed temporarily called the Community of Latin American & Carribbean States that excludes the US and Canada. The new group has yet to pick an official name and will fuse the functions of the Rio Group and of the Latin American and Caribbean Summit. Bolivian president Evo Morales has been one of the main supporters of this idea as a way to enhance regional commerce and unity and keep the United States out. Morales said, “Where the United States imperialism is, there is no democracy, no economic development, there is no peace with social justice.” The group’s next meeting will be in Venezuela in 2011 and in Chile in 2012. All the Presidents of the 32 nations assembled in Mexico hailed the creation of this new regional block as a historic achievement.
