La Paz Announces Epidemic Alert for Bubonic Plague

Posted: Nate on Aug 24 | Health

The department of La Paz has been placed under an epidemic alert after the Departmental Health Service (Sedes) confirmed bubonic plague as the cause of death in a 14-year-old boy.    René Barrientos, chief of Sedes´ Epidemiology Unit, announced that the boy died three weeks ago with symptoms consistent with bubonic plague.  Officials also announced that there are at least three more suspected cases in the area though test results were not yet conclusive.  The epidemic alert will increase control and give a boost to prevention campaigns.

The death occurred in the community of Curiza in the municipality of Apolo on the Peruvian border.  Recently there have been three reported deaths and over 30 suspected cases of bubonic plague on the Peruvian side of the border.  Barrimientos said that his unit issued the alert in part because of the fluid immigration between Bolivia and Peru in the affected region.  Plague is a mice-borne disease which can be easily spread in its pneumatic form though is not very contagious  in the bubonic stage.
