Government Halts Sugar Exports

Posted: admin on Feb 19 | Business & Economy, Health

President Evo Morales issued a decree temporarily banning all sugar exports to combat price speculation and assure food security.   Minister of the Presidency Oscar Coca said to the press that the measure was to combat inflation in sugar prices and speculation on this vital product.  Coca affirmed that the President had received numerous complaints about a sudden and unjustified rise in sugar prices that threatens the most vulnerable in society.  The President ordered the police and military to intercept and seize any attempted sugar exports. The government recently began selling subsidized sugar at Bs. 3.6 per kilogram (or roughly $.25 per pound) through the company Food Production Aid (Empresa de Apoyo a la Produccion de Alimentos).
