Garzón Declines Appointment to Bolivian Sea Claim Team

Posted: Matthew Grace on May 13 | International

Baltasar Garzón, the Spanish ex-judge who Bolivian president Evo Morales hoped to tap to lead the country’s maritime claim against Chile, has declined to advise the Bolivian government in a possible lawsuit before international courts.

“President Morales called me and we spoke, but I cannot accept because I am a judge and [the appointment] is inconsistent with that,” Garzón said to CNN en Español. “I will not participate in this event.” He said that the appointment would be incompatible with his current role as an advisor to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, and his forthcoming appointment as advisor to the Organization of American States (OAS) for the peace process in Colombia.

Garzón previously tried former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in Spain for crimes against humanity. Morales’s suggestion that he join the Bolivian maritime claim team provoked some Chileans, who suggested that it might be better to seek advice from Osama bin Laden’s successor.
