Morales said on March 27th in a press conference in Sucre, “I want to tell you that I will personally combat corruption politicians because they do so much harm. I think I have the morals and ethics to do this.” The events under investigation lead back to 1997-2001 when Fortún was the Minister of Government for Hugo Banzer, Bolivia’s notorious ex-dictator who went on to be democratically elected in 1997. Fortún’s daughter said her father had opted for “self exile” because he is a “victim of the pluri-national state of President Evo Morales and vice President Linera”. Morales said today that there had not been a stay-order for Fortún as his legal proceedings were set to begin on April 6th.
