Evo to Attend Chilean Rival’s Inauguration

Posted: admin on Feb 25 | International

President Evo Morales confirmed on February 24th that he will be attending the inaguration of Chilean President Sebastian Piñera on March 11th. Bolivia and Chile have had very poor relations since Chile deprived Bolivia of access to the Pacific Ocean in the War of the Pacific from 1879-1884. Under left leaning Chilean President Michele Bachilet Bolivia and Chile entered into bi-lateral negotians that have thus far done little to change their frosty relations. Piñera, a Harvard educated billionaire has little in common with Bolivia’s Morales who comes from poor indigenous roots, but the two have thus far not clashed on any fronts and it remains to be seen how Bolivia-Chile relations will develop under Chile’s incoming right-wing president. One thing that may bring Bolivia and Chile closer is a mutual dislike of Peru’s Alan Garcia who has exchanged many bitter words with President Morales and the Chileans. Peru has yet to confirm if President Garcia will be attending Piñera’s inauguration.
