His comments alluded to Venezuela severing all diplomatic ties with Colombia last week. In his comments, President Morales said that, “In our constitution it says that we are a peaceful nation. Bolivia is never going to provoke a war with anyone, but if someone provokes us we have the right to defend ourselves and we are preparing to do so.” Venezuela officially cut off diplomatic relations with Colombia last week after a series of allegations between the countries concerning guerrillas fighting in both nations. Colombia initially accused Venezuela of aiding FARC rebels in that country in a meeting of the Organization of American States (OEA). Venezuela responded with accusations of Colombian/U.S. attempts to destabilize the Venezuelan government. President Morales has joined his political ally Hugo Chávez in condemning Colombia´s accusations and pointed to American influence in Colombia as the root of the problem saying, “Unfortunately Colombia seems to be a loyal and obedient servant to the government of the United States.” He further charged that American anti-drug and anti-terrorism programs in the region are covers for attempts at undermining democratically-elected governments that are unfriendly to the US. Current pro tempore president of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa immediately called an emergency meeting of the 12 leaders of the region to solve the crisis. President Morales applauded the decision saying, “we will be the ones to resolve this crisis” without the aid of Washington. Current Colombian president Álvaro Uribe, who will hand over power to president-elect Juan Manuel Santos on August 7th, also expressed his hope that the UNASUR meeting will provide a satisfactory solution.
