Evo Asks Police Not to Be “Imperialist Informants”

Posted: Nate on Feb 26 | Law & Justice

In his speech commemorating the 73rd anniversary of the National Police today, President Evo Morales employed his famously passionate and bombastic rhetorical style to endorse police reform and denounce the influence of capitalism.  The President asked that the National Police force adopt a new doctrine of antimperialism, saying that as a state institution if the police force fails to recognize Bolivia´s “grand rebellions against different empires” it will be left “outside of the profound transformations” of the new plurinational state.

In a thinly veiled reference to the influence of the United States, Evo reminded police that their primary task is service to the state, not to be “informants” to agencies of the “empire.”  President Morales and the new Commander of the Police, coronel Óscar Nina, are also undertaking a new plan to curb the corruption which has plagued several sectors of the police force.

President Morales´ speech also called upon the National Police to protect Mother Earth and to combine this goal with the “death of capitalism.”  In addition to his proposed reforms for the National Police, President Morales called attention to the environmental destruction reeked by developed nations.  “Death to capitalism or death to planet Earth” noted Morales, who ended emphasizing that, “if we don´t all contribute to the defense of Mother Earth, we are all responsible for the disappearance of humanity.”
