On June 14th the Cochabamba Legislative Assembly voted for a resolution giving them each a salary of Bs. 8,500 per month ($1,214). Cochabamba Assembly secretary Carlos Noe said that the new salary complies with the austerity measures solicited by President Evo Morales. “The Bs. 8,500 was apporved on the austerity principle that we have come to work and not to earn money.” The Cochabamba Departmental budget is 5.3 million bolivianos and the assembly salaries will not represent 15% of that annual budget. The Cochabamba Assembly pays itself less than that of Santa Cruz which pays each member Bs. 13,800. In 2010, Bolivia’s monthly minimum wage (which most rural workers do not achieve) is Bs. 679.5 or $97.
