Caranavi Dispute Grows Violent

Posted: Nate on May 04 | Business & Economy, Transportation

After nine days of road blockades which have cut off the departments of Pando and Beni from La Paz and the Altiplano, violence erupted yesterday in Palos Blancos, a town straddling the regions in dispute.  Violence broke out around 6:00 pm on Monday when angry citizens of Palos Blancos set fire to nearly 50 commercial kiosks and stalls owned by vendors from Caranavi.  Vendors from Caranavi often travel to Palos Blancos to participate in the town´s Saturday market.  While the encounter involved nearly 2,000 people and stalls continued to burn until midnight, there were no reported injuries.  The violence reportedly broke out after a meeting of federations and social organizations in the area met the night before to discuss potential measures to counter the road blocks.

The violence represented a high-water mark in tensions over a disputed citrus-processing plant originally planned for construction in Caranavi which was later moved to Alto Beni.  Caranavis have entirely blocked the route between La Paz and Alto Beni for nine days in protest of what they say is a broken promise on the part of the government.  The protesters announced that they will be marching to La Paz from Palos Blancos on Wednesday as a counter-protest.
