Bolivian Ex-Presidents Accused Under Retroactive Law

Posted: admin on Mar 19 | Law & Justice, Politics

On March 18th, ex Bolivian President Carlos Mesa refused to stand for trial under a new law that imposes harsh retro-active penalties for crimes committed while in office. Mesa said to Red Erbol, “On an international level one can’t accept that a crime that yesterday carried a sentence of 2 years today carries a sentence of 15 and if they judge you with increased penalties, this makes the fundamental element of non-retro-activity very vulnerable.”  Transparency and Anti-Corruption Minister Nardi Suxo said this Wednesday that Bolivian ex-leaders Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga Ramírez (Hugo Banzer’s vice president and then President), Carlos Mesa Gisbert (ex-president), Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé (former head of the Bolivian supreme court and ex-president) and Victor Hugo Cardenas (Bolivia’s first indigenous vice-president) will all be prosecuted for crimes under the new “Law of Responsibilities” that the Movement to Socialism dominated legislature has recently passed.

All of the ex-presidents to be prosecuted under the new law are political opponents of Evo Morales and several have run against him in recent elections. Mesa sees this as expunging political opponents through the legal system. “What a coincidence that various ex-presidential candidates, governor candidates, and mayoral candidates are now being threatened with prosecution or being forced to testify immediately after the just finished elections [of December 6th, 2009]. The absolute concentration that President Morales has today, he owns the executive, legislative and judicial [branches], it makes me doubt about the true search for justice.” All of Bolivia’s ex-presidents signed a joint letter declaring that the new Law of Responsibilities contravenes major international treaties Bolivia has signed and violates Bolivia’s new constitution. Mesa stands accused of validating oil and gas contracts that hurt Bolivia.

    First things first.
First, the removal of the already-corrupted long-standing judiciary, hopefully replaced by some competent elected not-yet corrupted judges.
Then, let the trials begin, that is–if they can catch up with the perps, that is. (Watch for the Florida/US population to increase proportionally.)
The truth will out, eventually–and the role of the USA in the exploitation/subjugation of Bolivia will be proved.
When the outrages of the past decades become public knowledge, Evo’s opposition will evaporate into thin air, and the credibility of the USA in SA (and the world) equally finished.
A new world order is indeed underway, and it can’t happen soon enough for the whole world (yes, including in the US).
    Viva Bolivia and Evo Morales!

Magyarosi Árpád was assassinated by a group of assassins cops (militars? from Venezuela??) in a hotel Las Americas during being asleep in the Bolivian Santa Cruz .
Arpad was invited for a 1-month visit to Bolivia by his friend from his childhood, Toaso Elod now in prison. He was a university student in Hungary. He bought his own ticket on his own money. He arrived to Viru Viru airport (Santa Cruz). About his personality: he was very calm, with high knowledge in arts, was a teacher, he could not and would not commit either in his head anything he is accused of!

    To Magyarosi Arpad’s mom,,,
I am so sorry for your loss.
Thankfully, I can’t imagine what you must be going through. As a fellow parent, I could not wish that on anyone. My sincere condolences to you and yours.
I followed the links you provided, and remain unconvinced about innocence or guilt. One thing was very clear though, and cuts directly through all of the questions and accusations.
Arpad was clearly a man making his own decisions about what he would do and with whom he would do it–and in this case he chose wrong, and it cost him his life. Whether he was a part of the team of assassins, or simply a non-participatory friend visiting, he had to know what was going on in that group, and chose to not leave it. He thus became a part of it.
I have no doubt the group was hired to assassinate Evo Morales by people including the now-on-the-run Branko Marinkovic, with the net being drawn in on the rest.
Arpad might have been the almost perfect son, but in this case it seems that he badly misjudged and it cost him his life.
    Again,,,my condolences for your loss.
