According to the chief of Road Systems of the Mayor´s Office, Rodrigo Rodríguez, the changes will be instituted in an incremental process after the inauguration tomorrow. Authorities announced that the first project will convert Avenida Arce, a main artery of the city center, from a tunnel to an above-ground street with traffic moving toward the center. The other works include the conversion of 20 de Octubre into a two-way street and the construction of an underground walkway in the space between Avendia Sánchez Lima and Avenida Héroes del Acre. The Bicentennial Plaza was originally intended to be opened at the end of 2009´s bicentennial celebrations, but the opening was postponed due to heavy rains and problems with electrical and water connections. According to reports from the Mayor´s office, the project required an investment of 14 million bolivianos. The plaza will feature murals of the city on the walls bordering Calle Villazón which will be illuminated by strong reflectors. The city´s new infrastructure projects will also include an expansion of sidewalk space bordering Plaza del Estudiante and Plaza Reyes Ortiz which will ease pedestrian traffic in those areas.
