Beni Gov. and Former Prefect Under House Arrest for Corruption

Posted: Matthew Grace on May 17 | Law & Justice, Politics

Yesterday, Bolivian judge Narda Vega ordered the house arrest of the governor of Beni, Ernesto Suárez Sattori. Suárez is being investigated for alleged irregularities committed during his previous term as prefect in the purchase and repair of an electrical generator in San Borja.

Suárez will not be able to leave his home except for work—in this case, his duties as governor—and he must be accompanied by a police escort.

“I am going to continue working,” Suárez said after a hearing. “I think that the government is trying to intimidate. I will not flee the country.”

Senator Bernard Gutierrez, of the opposition party Plan Progreso Bolivia–Convergencia Nacional (PPB-CN), said that his party would meet today to assess the situation and see what measures will be undertaken. “This is the typical attitude of the government,” he said. “Where it doesn’t win, it overthrows.”

Close to a thousand people gathered yesterday at the district court in Beni to give support to the governor at his hearing.

Also at the hearing yesterday was the ex-prefect of Beni, Carlos Navia, who is currently an assemblyman. Navia is in MAS, the same political party as Bolivian president Evo Morales. He was also put under house arrest.

Suárez and Navia are accused, along with former San Borja mayor Ronald Tovías—who was a no-show at the hearing—of embezzlement, wasteful conduct, dereliction of duty, and abuse of influence during the purchase and repair of a power generator in San Borja in 2005-2005.
