Banzer Official Applies to be Political Refugee in Chile

Posted: admin on Mar 29 | Law & Justice

On March 29th, Guillermo Fortún has applied to be a political refugee in Chile after fleeing Bolivia on March 18th amidst a corruption investigation relating to his time as Government Minister for Hugo Banzer from 1997-2001.  Fortún flew out of the La Paz airport and arrived at the  Arturo Merino Benítez airport in Chile where he presented his passport and applied for political asylum.
Fortún is required by Bolivian law to testify in court on April 6th under accusations of transferring public funds to his private accounts. Bolivian authorities confirmed that no order had been issued requiring Fortún to stay in Bolivia. The district prosecutor Williams Dávila, said that “the process will proceed while [Fortún is] in rebellion”. The Public Ministry will ask for all of Fortún’s assets to be frozen during his trial. Fortún is yet another prominent opponent of President Morales to flee the country while under corruption charges along with Branko Marinkovic and Manfred Reyes Villa.
