Coronel Vladimir Pol said that the plantation was located near the community of San Julian, 110 kilometers northeast of Santa Cruz. Three people were arrested at the plantation when they were caught harvesting the marijuana. This is one of the largest marijuana busts in Bolivia’s history which is over-shadowed by coca and cocaine production problems. This one seizure is more than Bolivian police find in most years. The drug police (FELCN) explained that marijuana seizures rose astronomically from 3.7 tons in 2000 to 1,937 tons in 2009. Using the DEA estimation for the street value of marijuana from 2008, this haul would have a US street value of $24 million dollars. The drug trade is a lucrative business in Bolivia where the 2010 per capita income is estimated at $4,600.
